Organisations need to take a proactive approach to foster trust and security among remaining employees after layoffs. Leslie Tarnacki, Chief Human Resources Officer at WorkForce Software, spoke with HRO Today about how mass layoffs create heightened levels of stress around job stability and burnout due to a workload increase.

Tarnacki explains that leaders must communicate and provide additional attention to employees and front-line managers following layoffs. She also shares how employers can protect company culture when dealing with mass layoffs and ease anxiety amongst remaining employees.  

“Employers need to acknowledge how these survivors are feeling and be candid, clear, and consistent in communicating reassurance,” says Tarnacki. “It’s important for organisations to give these individuals additional attention.”

She continues, “This can be done by providing guidance on priorities and establishing opportunities for peer-to-peer communications among the company’s front-line managers so they feel connected and can collaborate and share learnings with one another.”
